The site for food lovers in The Hague and surroundings

Simonis aan de haven

Visafslagweg 20

2584 DM  Scheveningen

Opening hours: Monday - Sunday (7 days):

9.00 - 18.30 hrs.

Simonis won many prizes in the Herring tasting contest of the newspaper Algemeen

Dagblad! We tasted the herring and it is great.

You can find an enormous variety of fish, but also ready made products such as sushi, quiche and all the products you need to make the sushi yourself.  They stock Dover Sole, turbot, brill, swordfish, cod, plaice etc etc.  They also stock a large variety of seafood and shellfish.  They have large Canadian lobster and in season Oosterscheldekreeft (end of March to June).

In the aquarium with all kinds of shellfish they scoop out whatever you want e.g. Vongole in all shapes and sizes. Different varieties of oysters such as the  Gillardeau which are the best, with a sweet after taste.  There are also Fines de Claires.

Simonis sells sustainably harvested fish as much as possible and meets the MSC standards.

De Savornin Lohmanplein 11

opening hours: Tuesday - Friday: 9:00 - 18:00, Saturday 9:00 - 17:00

The fish shops owned by the Zoutenbier family are of course famous in The Hague and therefore cannot be left out.  This one is located at the front of the shopping centre on the Savornin Lohmanplein.

As everyone knows fish is a matter of trust:  fish has to be fresh!  Then you are at the right place at Zoutenbier.  You will not find all the exotic fish from the far corners of the earth;  but the catch of the season and caught locally.  Mr Zoutenbier buys his fish directly from the fish auction e.g. turbot, sea bass, ling, Dover sole and sardines. The super fresh tuna looked inviting for some sushi but we bought salmon trout for the BBQ.

For those days when you have no time to cook Zoutenbier has home made dishes such as cod in mustard sauce and salmon fillet in a red pepper and cream sauce.  Their shrimp croquets are of course famous in The Hague and also their fish salads (such as Mackerel, tuna and herring).

Opening hours:

The two brothers Zoutenbier (they look alike!) have taken over the business from their father and now each have their own shop.  This one has a different assortment to the Savornin Lohmanplein which you can see in the variety of ready made bites such as fish pizza, rolls etc ready made meals.

The fish is super fresh and is displayed pleasingly. Everything you might want, Dorade (Bream), plaice, salmon etc hard to choose.  To make it easier you are helped in a professional and friendly manner.

The shrimp croquets are freshly made daily at the Groot Hertoginnelaan. They are famous in The Hague. We were given a taste and for € 1,10 we can definitely advise you to come and try one!

*Winner of the Smaakwebshrimpcroquet

tasting 2012///

In the large fish display counters along the walls fresh fish are staring at you when you walk in the door.  The shop just opened early November 2011.  In the back of the shops there is a seating area where you can eat some fish at lunch time or after work.

They have a large variety of fish and the quality is high.  One of the owners earned his stripes at Simonis and the Harbour club.  When you have little time you can buy a ready to bake dish which you only have to slide into the oven.

Smaakwebshrimpcroquettasting 2012:

The most expensive croquet of the tasting (see Newsletter 5), not home made, but made with Imko Binnerts recipe. And you can certainly taste that, nice creamy filling with plenty of Dutch (grey) shrimps and parsley and a good crust with Panko (Japanese breadcrumbs).  Quite expensive though: € 2,50 each.

Frederik Hendriklaan 121.K

2582 BX  Den Haag

Opening hours: monday - Friday 9.00-18.00, Saturday 8.00-17.00 hrs.

They had a huge banner outside the shop for a while:  the best fish shop in 2011!  We are not entirely sure what it meant.  We do now know that it is a good fish shop with a lot of ready made products.  It is a Smaakweb shop.  They also organize many popular workshops.  Our Smaakweb friend Sylvia mentioned it before.  We will re-visit this shop and report back.

Roeleveld & Zn.

This fish shop has been established for ages, there is not a single person in Scheveningen who does not know Roeleveld! Now on a brand new location. You can buy fresh fish daily supplied from the auction at wholesale prices, e.g. 3 kg whiting for €10,00 or 7 herrings (June) for €10,00, incredible value! They have a good assortment of deepfreeze produce and the most common types of fish fresh in their display. Sometimes they also have a more luxury fish assortment depending on what they find at the fish auction.... and everything is very fresh.
